In 1879, San Felipe, Texas sold part of its original 22,000 acre township to Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad to create Sealy. In 1881 a cotton gin builder, named Daniel Haynes, filled a request for a cotton-filled mattress. This led to the start of a company which he named this the Sealy Mattress Company after the town. The company grew exponentially, leading to inventions and innovation. Among them was a machine that compressed cotton.
